How To Fix a Clogged Toilet

Quick Reference: How To Fix a Clogged Toilet

Unclogging your toilet is often a quick-fix! Just follow these simple steps:

Step 1. First, remove the tank lid from the toilet and set it aside.

Step 2. Lift up on the float ball in the tank to keep the toilet from overflowing. While you’re holding up the float ball, turn off the water shut off valve. This is located in the wall right behind your toilet. Turn the valve right (clockwise) to turn it off.

Step 3. Now that the water is turned off, push your plunger down into the toilet bowl and pull it back with some force. Do this a few times.

Step 4. Now, turn the water back on by turning the valve to the left (counterclockwise).

If the toilet is still clogged, just repeat this process! If your toilet remains clogged despite this effort, just give us a call at (470) 205-2224 or submit a maintenance request in your resident portal. We’re here to help!

Ways to Prevent a Clogged Toilet

A clogged toilet is one of the most frustrating issues in a house, but there are many easy prevention techniques that can be employed in any household to prevent this from ever becoming an issue.  Here are some top tips:

  • Don’t use your toilet as a garbage can or garbage disposal. Throw out all food, cooking grease, cotton swabs, cotton balls, tampons and applicators, baby wipes, toys, and plastics in the trash.
  • Keep the lid closed at all times so children, adults, and even pets, don’t toss any items or accidentally knock over any objects into the toilet.
  • Avoid an overabundance of toilet paper. Even though toilet paper is designed to dissolve in toilet after use, too much toilet paper can cause clogs.
