How To Manually Open Garage Door

Quick Reference: How To Manually Open Garage Door

When the power goes out, your car isn’t trapped inside your garage. You can easily open the door manually! Before you begin, make sure your garage door is closed and that nothing is in the sensor’s way before it comes down. Now, it’s time to open the door.

All garage doors have a manual release. What is it?

The manual release is typically a red cord hanging down from above the garage door. The release has a lever that you can pull straight down to open the door. Pulling the cord down disconnects it from the trolley, the mechanism that moves the door up and down. Once you’ve pulled the red cord down, you’re ready to manually lift up your garage door!

When you’re ready to close the garage door, pull the cord down towards the door which will reattach it to the trolley. Then, you can manually close your garage door.

Tips for Keeping Garage Doors Operational

Garage doors are crucial for keeping our cars safe and clean, as well as storing important tools, boxes and documents, so making sure they operate efficiently is important.  Here are some tips to help keep your garage doors operational:

  • Regularly lubricate the rails to make sure the door rollers continue to glide up and down the rails smoothly
  • Prevent laser interference by removing boxes that might be in the way, sweeping away leaves that blow in during the change of seasons, and stepping around them carefully so you don’t accidentally knock them out of alignment.
  • Avoid overuse of garage door. Like any large mechanical device, overuse can cause issues, so don’t treat it like your front door and try to only open and close garage doors when necessary.
