How to Repair and Replace Window Screens

Window screens are a great way to enjoy a fresh breeze while preventing insects from getting inside. When a screen is broken or torn, it’s time to repair and replace it. As long as the frame is in good shape, you can simply replace the mesh screen with items purchased from your local hardware store.

Steps to repair and replace window screens.

  • Step 1 – Remove the window screen and lay it on a flat surface.
  • Step 2 – Pry the window screen spline from the grooved edges and dispose of the damaged screen. A flathead screwdriver can be used for prying the spline.
  • Step 3 – Take a new roll of screen mesh and stretch it over the entire window frame so that it overhangs from each side.
  • Step 4 – Place the old spline (or new spline, if required) over the grooved edges of the window frame.
  • Step 5 – Use a spline roller to reinsert the spline over the new screen mesh, pushing both into the grooves.
  • Step 6 – Cut the excess mesh away with a utility knife or scissors. Avoid cutting the spline
  • Step 7 – Place the screen back in the window.
