Dripping faucets are not only annoying; they can unnecessarily increase your water bill too. Fortunately fixing it is relatively quick and easy. Whether the drip is coming from the faucet or one of the two handles, the fix is the same. If the drip is from the faucet, shut off the individual hot-water and cold-water supply valves to see which handle is the culprit.
Steps to repair a leaky sink faucet.
- Step 1 – Shut off the local water valves, typically below the sink.
- Step 2 – Remove the drip-causing handle. This may involve an Allen wrench or a Phillips head screwdriver, depending on the handle type.
- Step 3 – Use a wrench to loosen the packing nut and remove the interior cartridge. Some faucets may require a specialized tool for removing the cartridge.
- Step 4 – Install a new cartridge. Cartridges come in different shapes and sizes, so you may need to go to the store at this point to purchase the correct one.
- Step 5 – Reattach and tighten the packing nut, then the handle.
- Step 6 – Open the water valves and confirm that your faucet is no longer leaking!
